PHARMACOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Pharmacological action
Vitamins have different functions. Many vitamins act
biochemically; as precursors in synthesis of coenzymes
necessary in human metabolism. That mean; these vitamins
perform a number of essential functions. When not available in
adequate amount, consequences may lead to certain serious
diseases. So, an optimal amount is required, that provides all
necessary nutrients. Vitamins regulate metabolism, help to
convert fat and carbohydrate into energy and assist in the
formation of bones and tissues.
Mechanism of action
Vitamins exert their effects
in three main ways:
1. Most water soluble
vitamins act as coenzymes for specific enzymes: Many enzymes
are inactive without the presence of small amounts of
substances called co- factors. These co-factors can be trace
metals or organic molecules. Organic molecules that function
as co-factors are called co enzymes. Most water soluble
vitamins act as coenzymes for specific enzymes.
2. Some vitamins act as antioxidants:
Vitamin A, C, E & K function as antioxidants.
3. Some vitamins act as hormone:
Specific binding sites (receptor) have been identified for
vitamin A and D for exerting their hormonal activity.
